Click HereEvery month we feature an interesting headstone or marker and the person who lived the life remembered.
This month we honor and celebrate the lives of John W. Iliff his wife Elizabeth and her second husband Bishop Warren. Located on the east side of Block 63, just north of the Ivy Chapel, stands this magnificent monument and an adjacent one for the bishop. John and Elizabeth opened a general store in Denver City in the spring of 1859. John began to purchase trail weary and gaunt cattle from the constant stream of immigrants arriving almost daily from the east. His herd grew to over 35,000 head and he became the west's 1st great cattle baron.
He died unexpectedly in 1878 and was originally buried in Riverside Cemetery. Fairmount opened in 1890 and he was moved here.
At the time his death his estate was valued at a million dollars. Elizabeth continued to run the business. She became in her own right a successful business person.
Soon after wards she married Bishop Warren. Together they donated the funds for what is now the Iliff School of theology at the University of Denver.
If you have immediate need of our services, we're available for you 24 hours a day.
It is not always possible to pay respects in person, so we hope that this small token will help.
Dying is one of the few events in life that's certain to occur, yet one we rarely plan for. Should we spend more time preparing for a two week vacation than we do our last days on Earth?
